A Step Ahead
Philippians 3:13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.
I did a good thing. A small good thing, but a good thing nevertheless. Before I went out to dinner with my friends, I ate an orange. I was on the verge of being very hungry and knew that it would take awhile before I food was sitting on the table before me. My goal really was simply to avoid being starving rather than focusing on what I would have at dinner. As I think about it, my orange did help me to make reasonable decisions at dinner.
I actually did two good things. The other is that I managed to stay away from the sugar and I didn't order dessert. A couple of other folks started out saying that they didn't want dessert, but were "convinced" to order. Convincing them didn't take any real effort. It was very easy. The desserts were brought to the table, they looked good, people ordered. I sat as the lone person with no sugary treat in front of me as I nursed my water. My friends did offer me some of theirs and I passed. Yeah! I held up to the charge for one day.
Sometimes holding off is much more difficult. There are even times when I feel like others are contributors and try to sabotage the plan. I remember a colleague who offered me food saying, "a pound gained by you is the same a pound lost for me." Of course, she was joking. Then again, was she? It really doesn't matter. For yesterday, I'm ahead.
