Willing Humble
2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
I took an advanced step class yesterday. It was truly a humbling experience. I like to be good at everything I do and I'm not good at this. Generally, I do a decent job when I take step. This class however is complicated and the instructor doesn't always call out each and every step. There was a point where I took this class regularly and had the steps down. I haven't been in months. I like to think that I can represent the sisters with a little rhythm. It wasn't happening yesterday. Fortunately there was another sister in the class to represent those with rhythm. I represented the awkward and slightly clumsy.
The instructor is in phenomenal shape. She clearly has a six-pack. It was clear because she hitched up het top shirt almost to her chin. No way would I do that an expose my snack pack lower abs. And, she has the nerve to be more than a decade older than me. The advantage of being young and in shape is just not working for me. I really need this work out.
At the end of the class, I was covered in sweat. I was so drenched that every square centimeter of my arms and hands was glistening. Good thing that I was able to focus on my longer term goal to put myself in the uncomfortable position of getting through the 60 minutes of the step class. I'm one class closer to my own six-pack.
Sometimes there are moments where we have to think of our longer term goal to get us through the immediate moment. If you watched the opening College Football weekend, you know that LeGarrette Blount of Oregon didn't manage to be an example of focusing on the goal when he landed a sucker punch that resulted in the end of his season and college career. When Blount got up that morning his first goal was to play well enough that he help his team win the game. When his team didn't win, he should have though about the next game or his post-college career. Ultimately, he wants to end up in the nfl. When he found himself taunted by Boise State's Byron Hout, he reacted...poorly. Now, the focus on Blount and his poor behavior rather than how well he performs on the field. If he had handled this differently, the focus would be on Hout and his unsportsman-like action. Now, only a few are discussion whether Byron Hout should be disciplined.
Hopefully, none of us will ever have challenging situations like this. However, we will face situations where we feel assaulted. Remember, just a few days ago I experienced my own little attack. What we need to do is to remember that in all that we do, we should act in a way that brings honor to the Lord. I have no idea of Blount's beliefs. By his apology, I do know he would have preferred not to have this incident in his past and have its shadow on his future. I'm not suggesting that we never fight the battle. In fact, we frequently need to fight. We need to be prepared in advance by arming ourselves with the full armor. (Ephesian 6:11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.)
Now, you may be asking yourself what this has to do with you health and fitness journey. The answer is a question. Are we acting in ways that brings honor to the Lord when it comes to health and fitness? Are we truly being good stewards of our bodies? This is not a question to bring guilt, rather is should bring awareness and help us get on and stay on the path. We may need to humble ourselves and be in circumstances that are a little uncomfortable in order to reach our goals. We can do this will help of the Lord, Jesus Christ along with others who support us. Our near-term goal is Divine Health on earth with a heavenly focus for eternity.
I'll willingly humble myself for the goal.
