Civility and Health Care Reform
Matthew 9:12 On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick."
You have to love the ability of the internet. When I got home last night, President Obama had just completed his address to the nation and I was on the phone when the Republican response was given. Early this morning, I turned on my computer and watch the entire Presidential speech and response on C-Span.
When you get a moment, you should listen to the entire thing. I think I'm going to review it a couple of additional times.
One thing that you will be hear about is our Congressman from South Carolina demonstrated incivility and heckled our President. Most believe that this is the first time in the history of Presidential addresses that the President has been heckled by a member of congress. South Carolina Republican Rep. Joe Wilson shouted "You lie!" after Obama said that illegal immigrants will not be beneficiaries of the new health care program.
Rep. Wilson did call the White House to apologize. However, what let him think that this behavior was acceptable in the first place. He is demonstrating a break down in civility that has happened with respect to this issue. We need to move beyond partisanship and even bi-partisanship for a new kind of Health Care Synergy that appreciates us all as people who need doctors and good quality health care when we are sick.
