1 Million Adults Get Arthritis Each Year

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that one in five Americans have arthritis.  As our population ages and continues to gain weight, the problem will continue to get worse.

The study found that arthritis was two-times higher in those who are obese.  The rate of arthritis is significantly higher in those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) above 40 with a rate of 38 per cent compared to the rate of the study of 22%.  Obesity also hampered the daily activities of those with arthritis compared to those with normal weight.

The key message here is that to maintain pain free mobility, regular exercise should be incorporated into the daily plan.  Simply walking can assist in improving mobility and flexibility as well as help to maintain a healthy weight.  Clearly, diet is also important in maintaining a healthy BMI and arthritis prevention caused or exacerbated by obesity.
