Lent - Day 6 - Do Not Worry
Matthew 6:25 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? (Read Matthew 6:25-34)
Worry is really an unhealthy activity. Worrying about anything has never brought change. Action has! Focusing on the worry results in anxiety and only brings more of the same when focused on for too long.
In fact, Harvard Medical School has found that there is a link between anxiety and physical illness. You probably didn't need a Harvard study to confirm what you know.
Perhaps, you know what I know. Too much worry can raise my blood pressure, make me lose focus and reduce my sleep. What could be good from all of that? I do know momentary anxiety may cause an adrenline rush and push me into action. It is the action that makes the situation better not the anxiety.
When God tells us not to worry, don't get the message confused. It does not mean don't pay attention. It does mean that your source is God and that food and clothes should not rule your every thought. Turn over those concerns to the Lord and let it guide your every action.
I just had to remind myself that making a better choice was eating an apple and not a cookie. I have been eating better during Lent and need to keep the focus on doing what I should do. All during lunch, I thought about getting cookie. I knew that cookies weren't on the plan for the day, however, I had told myself that it would be fine. When I got up, I came to my senses and grabbed an apple. My life is more than food and it should not rule my life. I should be a good steward of my body and treat the temple the way God would have it.
1 Corinthians 6:19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own
