Speak to Your Heart
Psalm 49:3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.
Former Nets forward Armen Gilliam suffered a heart attack and died after a pick-up basketball game. Gilliam, only 47 years old, played professionally in 2006 when he briefly came out of retirement to serve as player-coach for the Pittsburgh Xplosion of the American Basketball Association. In his college career, he went to the Final Four with the UNLV Runnin' Rebels team in 1987.
His death reminds us that you can have heart disease even it you are taking care of your temple. Proper diet and exercise is no guarantee that heart disease won't impact you. However, without both your odds of avoiding it are worse. Make sure you are taking care of you. Listen to your heart and speak to your heart with the proper care.
Can you recognize symptoms of heart disease? Women are more likely not realize they are having a heart attack. The American Heart Association provides some signs a heart attack may be happening:
- Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
- Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
- Shortness of breath. This feeling may occur with or without chest discomfort.
- Other signs of discomfort. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
- As with men, women's most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.
