Discipline and Ice Cream
2 Timothy 1:7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
You may wonder what discipline and ice cream have to do with one another. In my life, they are truly connected. I often eat ice cream just to eat ice cream. What I mean is that I have one serving, then another without accounting for how much I'm eating or feeling the need to stop before the entire container is finished. Then I tell myself I need to lose a few pounds. I actually describe myself as an ice cream addict. When looking at my behavior, I am acting as if ice cream has control over me rather than the other way around.
I know that I can stop the ice cream eating. I've done it before. I've completely given it up several times. Sometimes, for Lent or just because. But to completely control what I'm doing, I need to focus on my self-discipline and my longer term goals. Ice cream eating provides such a temporary pleasure while it can leave negative consequences for the long-term. God has given me self-discipline and when I don't exercise it I need to rely on the Lord to direct me as I focus on my Divine Health goals.
Look at the some of the definitions of discipline from the Free Dictionary below. Clearly, I need a behavior that is going to produce a mental improvement. I really need to ask myself am I submitting to the authority of God. I don't think God wants me to give up ice cream. The Lord does want me to be in control and to give me the desires of my heart. I can be my own blessing blocker by not acting properly. Really, can I eat all the ice cream I want and still get to and maintain my ideal weight. Of course, I can when what I want is reasonable and disciplined.
Maybe, ice cream isn't your issue. Maybe, exercising regularly is or it could be something else. Have you been giving yourself an excuse that really causes you to ignore your lack of discipline. We need discipline to what we need to do when we don't want to do it. It is hard to reach any substantial goal without discipline. We have been blessed with the gift of self-discipline. We just have to act. For the Word tells us in James 2:17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
Today, I will continue to pray as I boost my self-control.
